Redwood City Preschool Preview Night 2012

by chair

Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 from 6-8pm is the annual Preschool Preview Night at the Redwood City Community Activities Building – 1400 Roosevelt Ave, Redwood City, CA 94061.  This event is a wonderful opportunity for parents to talk to representatives from multiple preschools, day-cares and parent education organizations on one evening.

The organizers put together a very helpful hand-out with information from all of the schools attending for you to look through and figure out which schools you are most interested in talking with during the event.  Many schools bring sign-up sheets for up-coming school tours and advertise their annual open house at the event, so bring your calendar with you.

If you are totally new to the preschool/day-care search process, this event can be easily overwhelming.  Take a few minutes to look over the main types of preschools to give you an idea of what most closely matches your parenting/educational philosophy.  Some options in and around Redwood City include Montessori, Waldorf, Religious, and Play-based schools.  Some other types of schools include home day-cares with preschool activities included, co-operative schools where parents work/volunteer in and out of the classroom, and foreign-language immersion programs.  Read this article about the different types of preschool philosophies for more information.  Remember that each school is unique and so is your child and family, so take the time to take a few tours and see what works best for you and your family after talking with the schools at the event.

Below is the text from the handout:
The Redwood City Mothers Club, Bay Area Parent Magazine, and Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services welcome you to the 17th annual Mid-Peninsula Preschool Preview Night.
The schools participating offer varying schedules, parent involvement and philosophies to accommodate all families. We have made our best efforts to compile accurate information on each school.  Please be sure to verify the information with the school prior to making any non-refundable deposits. Schools are listed by city, north to south.  Note that some schools have multiple locations (marked with a *).  Visit http://rwcmc.org/preschool-preview-night-redwood-city-2012/ to view the directory online with links to each school, plus a map showing their locations.

The Redwood City Mothers Club is a volunteer-run organization for parents with children under the age of 5.  We offer playgroups, year-round events, and an online community for parents to connect.  Please visit our website at www.rwcmc.org to learn more.

Licensed Capacity: 25
Teacher/Student Ratio: 2-day 1:2, 3-day 1:3, Pre-K 1:4
Type of School: Co-op Preschool
Philosophy: Open Gate’s educational philosophy is founded upon the developmental readiness theory, that children’s growth and development progress by predictable stages at their own unique pace, and that optimum development occurs when that natural pace is respected.
Therefore, we emphasize social-emotional development, physical skills, competence and independence in daily routines, creativity and imagination, and self-esteem. We provide a rich, active environment where children choose their own activities, which, in turn, stimulate growth in all areas. Guidance techniques emphasize modeling, active listening and conflict resolution in which children work out their own solutions. We believe that practice in these areas, not early academics, provides the best foundation for formal schooling.
Open Gate’s supportive environment relies on parent participation for its success. Parents assist in their child’s classroom one session each week, and share in the school’s operation.

Milestones Preschool believes that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. We appreciate and support the close ties between the child and the family and recognize that children are best understood in the context of their family, culture and society. Therefore, parents are encouraged and expected to be active participants in their child’s experience at Milestones through participation in a variety of activities, including birthday and holiday celebrations, field trips, parent education evenings, fundraising events, the parent advisory group (PAG), and our parent networking opportunities. Parents are welcome visitors in the classroom at all times.
