Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 from 6-8pm is the annual Preschool Preview Night at the Redwood City Community Activities Building – 1400 Roosevelt Ave, Redwood City, CA 94061. This event is a wonderful opportunity for parents to talk to representatives from multiple preschools, day-cares and parent education organizations on one evening.

The organizers put together a very helpful hand-out with information from all of the schools attending for you to look through and figure out which schools you are most interested in talking with during the event. Many schools bring sign-up sheets for up-coming school tours and advertise their annual open house at the event, so bring your calendar with you.

If you are totally new to the preschool/day-care search process, this event can be easily overwhelming. Take a few minutes to look over the main types of preschools to give you an idea of what most closely matches your parenting/educational philosophy. Some options in and around Redwood City include Montessori, Waldorf, Religious, and Play-based schools. Some other types of schools include home day-cares with preschool activities included, co-operative schools where parents work/volunteer in and out of the classroom, and foreign-language immersion programs. Read this article about the different types of preschool philosophies for more information. Remember that each school is unique and so is your child and family, so take the time to take a few tours and see what works best for you and your family after talking with the schools at the event.

Below is the text from the handout:
The Redwood City Mothers Club, Bay Area Parent Magazine, and Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services welcome you to the 17th annual Mid-Peninsula Preschool Preview Night.
The schools participating offer varying schedules, parent involvement and philosophies to accommodate all families. We have made our best efforts to compile accurate information on each school. Please be sure to verify the information with the school prior to making any non-refundable deposits. Schools are listed by city, north to south. Note that some schools have multiple locations (marked with a *). Visit http://rwcmc.org/preschool-preview-night-redwood-city-2012/ to view the directory online with links to each school, plus a map showing their locations.

The Redwood City Mothers Club is a volunteer-run organization for parents with children under the age of 5. We offer playgroups, year-round events, and an online community for parents to connect. Please visit our website at www.rwcmc.org to learn more.

Teacher/Student Ratio: 2-day 1:2, 3-day 1:3, Pre-K 1:4
Type of School: Co-op Preschool
Philosophy: Open Gate’s educational philosophy is founded upon the developmental readiness theory, that children’s growth and development progress by predictable stages at their own unique pace, and that optimum development occurs when that natural pace is respected.
Therefore, we emphasize social-emotional development, physical skills, competence and independence in daily routines, creativity and imagination, and self-esteem. We provide a rich, active environment where children choose their own activities, which, in turn, stimulate growth in all areas. Guidance techniques emphasize modeling, active listening and conflict resolution in which children work out their own solutions. We believe that practice in these areas, not early academics, provides the best foundation for formal schooling.
Open Gate’s supportive environment relies on parent participation for its success. Parents assist in their child’s classroom one session each week, and share in the school’s operation.

Many schools bring sign-up sheets for up-coming school tours and advertise their annual open house at the event, so bring your PDA or calendar with you.

Open registration continues for all students during the month of February, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at your neighborhood school (except February 18 and 21, which are school holidays).

You can find your assigned neighborhood school by checking the district’s boundary book, available at www.rcsdk8.net/boundaries or by calling the Schools of Choice office at 650-423-2237.

NOTE: If you are planning to register your child to attend a school other than your assigned neighborhood school, you still need to register at your neighborhood school first.

What to bring:

A list of documents needed to register your kindergartner are available at http://www.rcsdk8.net/kindergarten or at any school office.

You may download and fill out the papers in advance to make the register process go more quickly. Please bring 4 copies of registration forms with you to registration. After you have registered your child, you may submit a Schools of Choice transfer application, available at http://www.rcsdk8.net/SchoolsOfChoice or at any school office. A full range of enrollment information is also available at http://www.rcsdk8.net/enrollment.

District Introduces New Schools of Choice Information Booklet

To help parents learn about their assigned neighborhood school and “schools of choice options” in the district, the Redwood City School District has updated and re-designed its School of Choice Information Booklet this year. Copies in black/white with a color cover are now available in each school office and at the district Schools of Choice office. Although the district has reduced the cost of producing this booklet by about 75% over the last few years, the district is asking parents to consider viewing the full-color document on line, or printing their own full color version, available at www.rcsdk8.net/enrollment to help save on printing costs.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011 from 6-8pm is the annual Preschool Preview Night at the Redwood City Community Activities Building – 1400 Roosevelt Ave, Redwood City, CA 94061. This event is a wonderful opportunity for parents to talk to representatives from multiple preschools, day-cares and parent education organizations on one evening.

The organizers put together a very helpful hand-out with information from all of the schools attending for you to look through and figure out which schools you are most interested in talking with during the event. Many schools bring sign-up sheets for up-coming school tours and advertise their annual open house at the event, so bring your PDA or calendar with you.

What is expected of your child upon entering Kindergarten?

Parents attending the meeting are already demonstrating support for their students’ education

Building blocks for school readiness include:

Self-help skills: toileting, dressing, proper rest and nutrition (necessary in a class of 20+ children vs. 2-3 at home)

Social & Emotional Development: learn to work w/ other children, know how to wait to get needs met, can share, take turns, has good problem solving skills, and can appropriately express feelings (no hitting/biting, etc)

Academics: make everything you do in this realm an adventure in learning as it is the teacher’s job to teach the academics (letters, numbers, etc)

It is important to work on all 4 areas of readiness in parallel and in balance.

Experience stories from parents

Trish Taylor: Her oldest daughter was very shy and clingy in preschool, where she attended a co-op, so Ms. Taylor read some books to her daughter to help ease the transition. One she mentioned was: Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten. Since her daughter had attended preschool in San Carlos, they did not know anyone going into school. Ms. Taylor talked to her daughter about how to make friends, how they didn’t know anyone at the beginning of preschool either, but now they had good friends there. On the first day, Ms. Taylor noticed another girl on the playground that looked shy and helped introduce her daughter to her. The transition went just fine.

Connie Ramierez: When her oldest son was entering Kindergarten, she had no idea what they were getting into; however, he did have a cousin starting that same year in the same class. That helped ease his fears a lot. For her second son, she played the “Get Ready Game” prior to school starting – which included getting dressed, eating breakfast, tying shoes, and heading to the school playground in the morning. At the playground they ran into other families and starting making some new friends prior to school starting, so there were several familiar faces in the classroom on the first day of school.

Kindergarten Curriculum

California Standards

Learn skills to get ready to read: sounds are connected to letters, phonemic awareness, bilingual schools learn sounds from both languages

Explore different areas of mathematics and science: measurement, shapes, interactions

Lots of reading to the children

Establish a relationship with books

Explain real vs. imaginary things and other concepts

Social Studies: expand vocabulary as they learn about the world, different jobs people have

Art/Music: expression of themselves

* It’s a great year for parents to talk to their children about what they are learning in school and look for opportunities to expand on that learning, explore it more at home.

Adjustment to Kindergarten (Parent stories)

Ms. Taylor: Her son didn’t understand that Kindergarten was EVERY DAY – not just 3 days a week like preschool had been. She emphasized the positives of school to encourage him through this adjustment: “You’ll see your friends at school today” or “Today is music class!” It took about a month for him to adjust.

Ms. Ramierez: Her little one cried for 3 weeks – every day. Thankfully the teacher was a big help – holding her son’s hand and giving him stickers to reward him when he tried hard not to cry and helping him to meet new friends. The teacher also noticed his unique abilities – like his ability to tie his own shoes – and gave him jobs to show off those skills – help his classmates tie their shoes, etc. It helped him adjust and feel special and valuable at school.

How are classes formed?

In Kindergarten, since the schools do not have much experience with the children, the classes are balanced by gender and age. In schools where language is a consideration, they also consider language skills.

In upper levels, the classes will also be formed using academic abilities and observed behaviors.

Parent/School/Teacher Relationships

Parents are encouraged to form relationships with the school early on. They are encouraged to come to school often and communicate frequently through email, in-person, notes, phone calls, etc. They are also asked to talk to their children every night and illicit conversation.

Ms. Ramierez: There are events specifically for Kindergarteners to get to know the school: ice cream socials, orientation, etc. She also suggests going to school the first day to volunteer to help out. Kids feel proud when mom or dad are involved at school.

Ms. Taylor: You can volunteer as much as you want at school. There are Site Council meetings you can attend to see what direction the school is going in, PTA meetings, Art in Action, etc.

ESL : English as a Second Language

There are 31 languages spoken in the RWC school district.

ELAC: English Language Advising Community – hosts meetings for parents of English learners to help parents support their children in learning English at school. Parents should be sure to ask teachers whether their child is considered an English learner or not.

Frequent Communication from School

Parents will receive a lot of communication from the school. They should look through their children’s backpacks every day and pay attention for “SCHOOL” communication. It will also come in the form of emails, newsletters, and mass phone-calls.

Assessments

Assessments are used to determine how teachers are teaching and how the students are learning. They happen three times a year, with a baseline drawn in August (ask about letters, numbers, sounds). The assessments are done in Oct, Feb/Mar, and May/June in preparation for parent teacher conferences and report cards. The teachers will ask more at each assessment throughout the year. The teachers use the results of the assessment to adjust their instruction to each child’s individual needs.

Enrollment Procedure

Visit home school in mid-Dec/Jan – set up a time to meet with the principal before school starts

Enrollment starts on Saturday, Jan. 29.

You enroll at your home school. What to bring

The Monday following is the beginning of open enrollment for all schools.

Non-boundary Schools:

Adelante (Spanish Immersion) and Orion (Parent participation) are two non-boundary schools. If you are interested in applying to these schools, you need to FIRST register at your home school and then fill out a Schools of Choice Form (link to 2010/2011 form, probably have a new one for next year). You MUST also visit the school and sign-in; otherwise, your child’s application will be put at the bottom of the list.

School tours for all schools happen in January. You should call the school office directly in early January to find out when they are scheduled.

Deputy Supervisor John Baker – (650)423-2251 – encourages you to call his office if you need help getting in contact with your home school (or school of choice) principal in order to schedule a tour and/or introduction.

Note about Schools of Choice: The application period is Feb. 1 – Feb. 29. They use a lottery of all siblings, then all PI home-school students, then the rest of the students to determine acceptance. Orion/Adelante students are notified of acceptance or wait-list status on April 15. If you don’t get in to your school of choice this year, you will receive a notification in the mail next year in Jan/Feb to ask if you want to remain on the wait-list. There may be openings during the school year due to families moving away. Your child will need to take that spot as it is open (including mid-year) or give up your spot on the list.

Priority is given to siblings, then PI home school, then the rest of the applicants. (For North Star – not until 3rd grade – students coming from out of the district (private schools) are the last bucket in priority.)

Hawes is the only school for which there is not always enough space for children living within the school boundary. In this case, the students will be placed at neighboring schools. No other school in the district has had this issue, including Roy Cloud; however, only 3 children who were NOT within the Roy Cloud boundaries and NOT siblings of existing Roy Cloud students got in to the school last year through the Schools of Choice program.

When will you know class sizes for next year?

We anticipate knowing this by the end of February. It is up to 30 kids for Kindergarten this year. We have received some extra funding to allow us to hire some new supporting teachers to help out in our classrooms this year, instead of switching children out of existing classes.

Ms. Stanchfield: I’ve taught Kindergarten for over 30 years. My first class had 32 children in it. My current class has 20 (due to Fair Oaks having extra federal funding). Yes, 32 children are very difficult to manage and that is why parental support is so important at our schools. It is interesting to note, however, that some students actually thrive on the energy a busy, full classroom provides.

There are some creative programs in place this year to deal with the large class sizes. Early-bird/Late-bird classes have half the class show up early and have 2 hours of instruction, then everyone is in the classroom for 2 hours, then the early arrivals leave for the last 2 hours. John Gill has the K-2 program where the Kindergarteners are only there for part of the day.

Program Improvement Schools

Fair Oaks

Garfield

John Gill

Hoover

Kennedy

MIT

Roosevelt

Selby Lane

Q/A

* I have a young Kindergartener. What if I send my child and she is not really ready?

You always have the option to take the child out. You will have a meeting with the teacher, principal, and school psychologist to determine whether it is the right route. Perhaps having the child stay in Kindergarten for two years is also an option.

* What kind of after-school care is provided/recommended with the short Kindergarten day? I’m concerned about a mixed-age program for my Kindergartener.

There are some private day-care providers on-site at a number of our schools. The principals of the schools are very knowledgeable about these programs. You’ll want to get in touch with them and talk to existing parents at the school to see what they’ve done. PCC also comes around and picks up kids after school.

There was a first grader that walked to Chucky Cheese when his parents failed to pick him up on an early release day. Make sure you tell your kids what to do if you don’t show up for some reason. For Kindergarteners, the process is the parent or care-giver hands the child to the teacher and the teacher hands the child back to the care-giver at the end of the school day.

* What about skipping Kindergarten?

We just had a case of a tiny, young (just turned 5) girl in Kindergarten who was reading at a 2nd grade level. We scheduled a meeting with her teacher, school psychologist, principal and parents to discuss her situation. She was in the K-2 program at John Gill, so we were able to slowly adjust her to attending school for an extra half-hour a day and assess how she was doing. It turned out she was ready, so she is now attending the full day.

This would look different in other schools without the K-2 program; however, your child would still start in Kindergarten and then do the assessment, meeting, etc.

* What is early dismissal and is it at all schools in the district?

Early dismissal happens on Thursdays for ALL schools in the district. It gives the teachers time for development. The times are noted on our website for each school.
